Young
Musician
of the
Caribbean
Award

The BritchamDR Young Musician of the Caribbean Award was born from an alliance between the British Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic (BritchamDR), the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in London (ABRSM) and Bangor University in Wales, with collaboration of the British Embassy in Santo Domingo. The regional competition is aimed at young classical instrumentalists between the ages of 12 and 26 from the Caribbean islands and brings together a prestigious panel made up of three British judges.

We launched the first edition of the award in 2019 and brought together 76 young musicians from the region who were judged by the adjudicators in the United Kingdom.  Nine finalists competed in an exciting concert open to the public in January 2020.

While competition lies at the root of the BritchamDR YMoCA event, its main objective is to encourage, stimulate and raise awareness among young people, that music transcends cultural, political, generational and geographical boundaries.

As a famous Welsh poet once wrote:

'Byd gwyn fydd byd a gano' - 'A people that sing and treasure the art of music'

Gwaraidd fydd ei gerddi fo' - Will become a civilized and humane nation'

For us, it’s wonderful to hear so much inspiring music throughout the region. We look forward to welcoming a new group of talented performers as we start our search for the 2021/2022 Young Musicians of the Caribbean.
